Stranger at Home (2021 — Ongoing)

I was raised by German parents in the United States. Throughout my life, but especially since moving to Germany four years ago, my experience of “home” has been shot through with a tension between intimacy and distance. What does it mean to be truly at home? How does it feel not to fully identify with one culture or the other, but rather with the fluid, changeable space between them?

Stranger at Home is a visual poem about this in-betweenness. It is borne of the quiet, gentle, yet omnipresent tension between belonging and alienation that I feel in both of my home countries.

This is my final project for my studies at Ostkreuzschule for Photography in Berlin. It is still ongoing.
